Kami Michi Research Center

In the 2023 AIA IHSADC "Branching Out", students create buildings protecting a historic local tree with a one-foot buffer zone. Designs integrate hand-drawn or digital techniques, emphasizing architecture's interaction with the tree, featuring spaces promoting conservation, sustainability, and public interaction, integrating nature and architecture while preserving ecological integrity.
The Kami Michi Research and Event Center, which loosely translates to "way of the spirits" in Japanese, is a modern tribute to the tree, blending modern Asian architecture with traditional elements. Featuring tall glass windows and sharp angles juxtaposed alongside circular doorways, my design emphasizes openness and natural materials, and encourages gathering in a sunken plaza. The event space's tall windows flood the room with natural light, creating a sophisticated, modern atmosphere while maintaining a welcoming and humanistic appeal.
